Ok, Let’s Strum Some Chords!
Strumming Pattern No. 1 – The Basic Pattern
This Pattern Is Really Easy. You Just Need To Repeat This Strumming Pattern: It’s Down Down Up
If You Don’t Know The Symbols… Here’s A Quick Explanation
The Most Important Thing For Making Almost Every Strumming Pattern To Run & Sound Smoothly Is This:
Do Not Stop The Up And Down Movement Of Your Strumming Hand.
See, The Pattern Says That You Need Strum Three Times:
Down Down Up
BUT
It’s Physically Not Possible To Strum Down Down Without Making An Up Movement Before.
In Other Words, Your Strumming Hand Is Hitting Three Times But You Do A Total Of 4 Movements, Namely:
Down (Up) Down Up
See? If You Perform The Second Movement (The Up) Then You’re Not Hitting The Strings
But Your Hand Is Moving Up.
Just Take A Look At The Video Below. Notice That The Strumming Hand Is Moving Constantly Up & Down.
Do Not Stop The Up & Down Movement Of Your Strumming Hand
Strumming Pattern No. 2 – The Extended Basic Pattern
This Pattern Is Similar To The Basic Pattern. But It’s Just A Little Longer.
Do You See The First Pattern Here?
Therefore, It’s Really Very Similar.
Apply The Same Rule Of Not Stopping The Strumming Hand Movement As Well.
The Pattern Demands: Down Down Down Up Down Up
But The Strumming Hand Is Doing This:
Down (Up) Down (Up) Down Up Down Up
Watch The Video And Notice That I’m Not Stopping The Strumming Hand Here.
Strumming Pattern No. 3 – The Complex Basic Pattern
You’ve Probably Heard This Pattern Before. Although I Call It Here “Complex” It’s Not Hard In Any Way.
See, There Is The First Pattern Again. It’s At The Beginning.
The Bracket In The Middle Of The Pattern Means That You Need To Hit Only The First Note.
This Is The Pattern That You Need To Strum:
Down (Up) Down Up (Down) Up Down Up
And You Can Guess It Already:
Don’t Stop Moving Your Strumming Hand.
Here Is The Pattern Slow.
How To Practice These Strumming Patterns
This Is Simple. You Know The Answer Already, I Guess.
It’s Through Repetition.
Do A Lot Of Repetitions.
But Before You Can Do That You Need To Make Sure That You Know What You Are Doing.
By That I Mean That You Exactly Know When Your Strumming Hand Is Hitting The Strings Or When You Just Need To Move Down Or Up Without Hitting The Strings.
The First Step Is:
KNOW THE PATTERN
The Second Step Is:
PLAY & REPEAT THE PATTERN
Do It Slowly First. It’s Very Important That You Experience Some Kind Of Flow. By That I Mean A Steady And Uninterrupted Cycle Of Patterns For One Or Two Minutes.
That’s The Goal.
You Need To Be Able To Play The Patterns Over And Over Without Stopping.
That Takes Some Time, But It’s Attainable.
Continuous Practice Is The Key Here.
If You Keep Practicing This For A Few Days & Weeks Then You Should Be Able To Make Quick & Good Results.
How To Make These Strumming Patterns Sound Professional
Ok. Let’s Say That You’ve Practiced These Patterns For A While And You Know Them Well And You Can Play Them Over And Over Without Stopping.
But You’re Unhappy With The Results. Some How You’re Not That Groovy…
Why Is That? You Might Ask.
The Reason Is This: You’re Probably Not Playing The Accents.
You Can Make Every Pattern Sound More Like A Groovy Drum Beat, If You Add Some Accents To Your Playing.
But What Is An Accent?
It’s This: Just Hit Harder And Louder.
But Don’t Exaggerate. Just A Slight Accent Will Do The Job.
Here Is Where You Should Play The Accents:
- No.1 The Basic Strumming Pattern
- No. 2 The Extended Basic Strumming Pattern
- No. 3 The Complex Basic Strumming Pattern
Conclusion
Well Done!
I Hope That Was Quite Helpful For You.
Be Patience.
Especially When You Are Not Grooving Yet. It Simply Takes Time And A Lot Of Practice.
