Guitar Chord D – The Easy Standard Shape
D Chord Diagram
This Is The Classic Standard Open Chord Shape. The Only Thing That You Have To Keep An Eye On Are The A & The Low E String.
You Have Two Options To Avoid The Strings From Ringing Here:
- 1st Do Not Strum Them In the First Place
- 2nd Mute Them With Your Thumb Like You See In The Photo Above.
Keep In Mind That The Thumb Muting Thing Is For Steel String Acoustic & Electric Guitars ONLY. If You Try This On A Nylon String Guitar Then You Gonna Have A Hard Time Because Of The Bigger Sized Neck.
Guitar Chord D – The Non Barre Chord/ Non Open String Shape

The Challenge Here Might Be The Stretch From The 2nd To The 4th Fret.
The Muting Of The E Strings Happens More Or Less Automatically If You Keep The Fingering And You Mute The E String With Your Thumb
The Barre Chord Shape w/ Root Note On The A String
Guitar Chord Diagram
This Shape Can Be Difficult Because Of The Barre Technique.
If This Feels Impossible For You To Play Then I Recommend That You Spend Some Practice Time On This Technique.
It’s Worth The Effort Because This Will Open Up Many, Many Different Chords & Songs That You Can Play In The Future.
Check This Effective Method To Learn The Barre Chords Faster Here.
The Other Hurdle Might Be The Muting Of The Low E String. For That I Recommend Using The Index Finger.
Position Your Index Finger Like You See In The Photo Above And Gently Touch The E String To Prevent It From Ringing.
Another Tip Is That The Barre Is Just Across Five Strings Instead Of Six Strings. This Saves You Some Energy.
The Barre Chord Shape w/ Root Note On The E String
D Chord Diagram
This Is The Famous “F-Major” Barre Chord Shape. Although This Shape Is Used Very Often It’s Probably One You Should Avoid In The Case Of The D Major Chord.
The Reason For That Is That On The 10th Fret It Sounds Quite High And Therefore Less Full And It Might Be Hard To Play Cause The Frets Are Very Close Together On The Higher Neck Positions.
Decide For Yourself!
The Thumb Shape
D Chord Diagram
This Shape Here Is Special Because You Fret The Lowest Note With Your Thumb. Just Like The Previous Shape It’s Relatively High On The Neck And Might Not Be Your First Choice. Just Give It A Try Nonetheless.
But It’s Great For Playing While Standing And You Can Play This One Here Instead Of The Previous Barre Chord Shape. This Might Be A Good Choice If You Need To Play For Longer Amounts Of Time Because Then You Can Avoid Exhausting Barre Chords.
